A Landmark Returns: Chatham’s Historic Coast Guard Boathouse Comes Home

It was a remarkable week in Chatham as the historic U.S. Coast Guard Boathouse made its long-awaited return to Stage Harbor on March 24, 2026—an important milestone in the ongoing restoration of this beloved structure and the redevelopment of 90 Bridge Street.
Arriving by barge from New Bedford, the Boathouse traveled along the coast before making its way into Stage Harbor in the afternoon hours. Community members gathered at vantage points including Harding’s Beach, Battlefield Landing, Champlain Road, and Old Mill Boatyard to witness the moment—many tracking the journey in real time as the barge Lucinda approached Chatham waters.
The following day, March 25, the project moved into its next phase as crews carefully prepared for the Boathouse’s placement. Using a crane and counterbalance system along Bridge Street, the structure was hoisted into position onto its new foundation. Temporary road closures were put in place to ensure safety during this complex and highly anticipated operation.

This effort reflects a strong collaboration between the Town of Chatham and marine specialists, as well as a shared commitment within the community to preserve and celebrate its historic resources.
The return of the Coast Guard Boathouse is more than a logistical feat—it is a powerful reminder of Chatham’s maritime heritage and the enduring value of preserving the places that define its character.
