A trail full of stories, a house full of Poe, and a week beyond Saturday
Celebrate Lower Cape · October 1–7, 2026
October begins with three distinct ways to spend an evening: Club d’Elf at Chatham’s Orpheum, Poe on Cape Rep’s stage in Brewster, and international short films at Wellfleet Preservation Hall. They do not ask for the same sort of attention. Pick the mood first; the calendar becomes easier after that.
Saturday is the crowded day. The sanctuary’s trail performances, the library’s poetry hour and Brewster’s afternoon wind concert all make strong daytime cases. Meanwhile, Frankenstein on screen in Provincetown starts at 10:30 a.m., and the Brewster craft fair leaves you more freedom to arrive when you like.
Monday through Wednesday deserve their own space. There is hospice education, home-energy information, prescription assistance, and a poetry-and-photography program about caregiving. There are days here for an outing and days for getting a useful question answered.
Reading the week
Choose an afternoon, not a cross-Cape race. Saturday’s Baker’s Pond hike runs 9:30–11 a.m. in Orleans. That leaves a reasonable break before a later outing, but the 1–4 p.m. Wellfleet trail program overlaps the 2:30 p.m. film screening and 3:30 p.m. Brewster concert. Pick one substantial afternoon anchor.
Book the commitment you are actually making. Castle Hill’s watercolor course takes three mornings. The national-parks learning series begins Tuesday and is a course registration. Brewster’s LGBTQ seniors support group is already within a series. Those details matter more than whether the first listed hour fits.
Keep the venues straight. Payomet’s circus-theater show is at the Big Top at WHAT in Wellfleet; Sons of Cream is at Highlands Center in North Truro. Wednesday’s Qya Cristál engagement is in the Crown & Anchor Restaurant. And use the Library Lane side entrance for Eldredge’s Copley talk and the other Chatham library programs during construction.
This Week’s Headlines
• A Saturday outdoors: Tunes and Tales on the Trails turns Wellfleet Bay’s accessible trail into the performance route.
• An afternoon concert option: Pursuit of Happiness: America 250 Wind Ensemble gives Brewster both Friday evening and Saturday matinee choices.
• The homeowner’s Tuesday: Home Energy Assessments: What Every Homeowner/Renter Should Know at Brooks Free Library starts at 1:30 p.m.
• The local-land Wednesday: Putnam Farm: Past, Present, and Future brings Orleans’ farm story into Snow Library at 6:30 p.m.
• A London production on a Provincetown screen: National Theatre Live: Frankenstein screens in Provincetown Saturday morning.
Don’t Sleep On This
The Friday-to-Saturday switch. See the wind ensemble Friday at 7:30 p.m. if you want Saturday for the sanctuary or the Hall’s short films. See the concert Saturday at 3:30 if daylight driving matters more. A duplicate performance on the calendar is a planning advantage, not another event you need to attend.
A Monday that stays in Wellfleet. Community Lunch runs noon–1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, followed by Thomas R. Pero’s Salter talk at the library at 1:30. Food, a short break between venues, then coastal ecology. Lunch is free and can end when the soup runs out; arrive during service rather than treating 1 p.m. as an arrival time.
An early Provincetown Friday. PAAM’s guided tour begins at 11 a.m. and lasts half an hour. That is a manageable way into a museum visit, especially if you prefer context before browsing alone. Later, the Mates opening reception runs 5–8 p.m. at the Crown & Anchor’s Paramount. Those are two different parts of town life, with a whole afternoon between them.
All times are Eastern. Follow the event links for registration or tickets. Prices are listed where published; seats and schedules can change.
🎨 Arts & Culture
Sat, Oct 3 · 11 a.m.–2 p.m. · The 204, 204 Sisson Road, Harwich
Visit the artists, makers and creatives working at the municipal arts building. This daytime invitation gives you a look inside the studios, rather than a performance seat. Allow an hour or two and see what catches your attention.
A reception and a guided tour give you something an ordinary gallery visit does not: a scheduled point of entry. If you have been meaning to spend more time looking, put an actual hour on the calendar.
Sat, Oct 3 · 2–4 p.m. · Brewster Ladies’ Library, 1822 Main Street
Hyder’s paintings put color and personal interpretation at the center. Her practice includes plein-air work, life painting and pet portraiture, with training at several Cape arts institutions. A reception gives you a different way into the work than passing the pictures on the way to the circulation desk. No registration required.
Fri, Oct 2 · 11–11:30 a.m. · Provincetown Art Association and Museum, 460 Commercial Street
A half-hour guided look at the museum, with room afterward to spend more time with the work that catches your eye. Included with $15 museum admission; members free. No advance registration required.
🧵 Hands & Habits
Sat, Oct 3 · 10 a.m.–4 p.m. · Castle Hill’s Edgewood Farm, Truro
Mary Jameson combines seaweed pressing and cyanotype to make works on paper. $200 including materials. Friday’s class is full; this separate Saturday session has its own registration page. Reserve through that page and obtain arrival instructions. Six hours means making this your main Saturday plan, not slipping it between two talks.
Tue, Oct 6 · 8–10:30 a.m. · Eastham Windmill, Eastham
The Eastham Painters Guild’s final scheduled outing of its 2026 painting season brings artists to the windmill. All ages and abilities welcome. Bring your painting supplies; questions or directions: Mike Novik, 508-776-7962. Make a morning of it before the rest of town gets moving.
This week separates small projects from larger commitments. The bookmark session is a modest Saturday make; the watercolor course asks you to clear three mornings. Language practice gets its own Tuesday evening.
Sat, Oct 3 · 10:30 a.m.–noon · Truro Public Library, 7 Standish Way, North Truro
Fabric, felt, embroidery thread and a simple blanket stitch become tea-bag-shaped bookmarks. Zoe provides guidance during the listed hours; supplies remain available for the rest of the day. All ages welcome. A small handmade project, rather than a full-day workshop commitment.
Mon–Wed, Oct 5–7 · 9 a.m.–noon each day · Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill
Deborah Snow leads three mornings of mostly outdoor painting with some studio work, concentrating on color, process and learning from mistakes. Intended for beginners who have played with watercolor and intermediate painters. $315; register and consult the materials list. Confirm workshop meeting instructions with Castle Hill before arrival.
Tue, Oct 6 · 5:30–8 p.m. · Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main Street
The dated listing welcomes people learning basic Spanish and those developing their conversational skills. Free.
🤝 Community
Mon, Oct 5 · 6 p.m. · Orleans Town Hall, Nauset Room, 19 School Road; also on Zoom
For property owners and residents in the Phase 3 service area: meet the project team and ask about construction, phasing and the schedule. The official meeting packet provides remote access. A useful calendar entry when road work and your property are part of the same conversation.
Community can mean swapping something useful, asking a practical question or sitting down to lunch. These are specific occasions to show up, with different rules about registration and appointments.
Tue, Oct 6 · 3:30–6:30 p.m. · Eldredge Public Library, 564 Main Street
Find a new-to-your-child costume without buying another outfit for one night. Clean, gently used costumes can still be dropped off October 1–3. Free; no registration. One costume per child, while supplies last. Donated costumes will not be returned.
Tue, Oct 6 · 1:30–2:30 p.m. · Brooks Free Library, Thornton Meeting Room, 739 Main Street
Cape Light Compact presents a session for both homeowners and renters. Before another heating season, make room for information about home-energy assessments rather than assuming the subject is only for someone planning a renovation. Free; registration required through the linked event page.
Mon, Oct 5 · noon–1 p.m. · First Congregational Church, 200 Main Street
Soup, bread, salad and dessert, with everyone welcome. Service ends at 1 p.m. or when the soup runs out. Free.
Sat, Oct 3 · 10 a.m.–2 p.m. · Truro Public Library, 7 Standish Way, North Truro
Free individual technology help by appointment. Bring the problem that has been holding you up instead of trying to turn a busy program into an impromptu help desk. Call 508-487-1125 to schedule a slot; the four-hour window is not your appointment length.
🍽️ Food & Drink
Saturday offers both groceries and browsing. Provincetown’s market has a four-hour morning window; Brewster’s craft fair runs through the afternoon and again Sunday. Neither needs to become a rushed stop before every other event.
Sat, Oct 3 · 9 a.m.–1 p.m. · Ryder Street, by Town Hall
Shop for vegetables, fruit, bread, eggs and other local food before the afternoon fills up. Sustainable CAPE lists this Saturday within its 2026 market season. SNAP, HIP, WIC and senior-coupon programs are accepted; ask the information booth about current terms. Use town parking; do not stop behind vendors on Ryder Street to unload passengers.
Sat–Sun, Oct 3–4 · 10 a.m.–4 p.m. · Drummer Boy Park, 773 Route 6A
Two days of browsing handmade arts and crafts at the park. An easy daytime choice if you prefer to arrive without a fixed performance time. Free admission; purchases extra.
💚 Health & Wellness
These listings cover information, assistance, support and movement. Support groups are not interchangeable with public lectures; first-time participants should establish how to join before arriving.
Mon, Oct 5 · 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. · Brooks Free Library, Thornton Meeting Room, 739 Main Street
Gemma Leghorn of Lily House introduces social-model hospice. For families trying to understand local end-of-life care, this belongs on the calendar alongside the arts outings: it is a chance to learn before a decision becomes urgent. Free; registration required through the linked event page.
Tue, Oct 6 · 2:30–4 p.m. · Brewster Ladies’ Library, 1822 Main Street
A meeting within an ongoing six-week series addressing retirement, loss, health challenges and other changes in later life. Sponsored by the library and Council on Aging with Cape Cod LGBTQ+ Senior Friends. Free; registration required through Diane McCarthy, 774-283-0931. Ask about joining the existing series.
Mon, Oct 5 · 6–7:30 p.m. · Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main Street
A support-group meeting with Sharing Kindness. The library calendar confirms this session but does not explain new-participant arrangements; contact the library before a first visit. A group meeting deserves different planning from a walk-in reception.
Tue, Oct 6 · 4–5 p.m. · Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main Street
A late-afternoon gentle Kripalu session with Patty Pipernos. For first-visit arrangements and what to bring, contact the library at 508-349-0310.
Wed, Oct 7 · 11 a.m.–noon · Truro Public Library, 7 Standish Way, North Truro
Dr. Joseph So of the Provincetown-based nonprofit offers help navigating prescriptions. Drop in or arrange a specific appointment at [email protected]. Bring your questions to this local assistance session.
🎶 Music & Live Entertainment
The music map stretches from Chatham’s improvised grooves to Orleans restaurant dates and North Truro’s Cream repertoire. The grid below gives the precise slots; the notes explain what sort of evening each offers.
Thu, Oct 1 · 7 p.m. · Chatham Orpheum Theater
Moroccan trance, jazz and improvised funk from the collective led by bassist Mike Rivard. Follow the event page to the theater’s ticket booking. Tickets through the event page.
Fri, Oct 2 · 7:30 p.m.; Sat, Oct 3 · 3:30 p.m. · Performing Arts Center, 95 Southern Eagle Cartway
The program includes music from West Side Story, Star Wars and Oklahoma!, alongside other American concert works. Saturday offers a daytime alternative to Friday’s performance. $35 general; $30 seniors; students and youth free.
Fri, Oct 2 · 6–9 p.m. · Hog Island Beer Co., 28 West Road
The band’s debut at Hog Island gives Orleans a Friday music option with dinner in the same place. Useful when you want an evening out without a separate restaurant reservation and a second drive. Food and drinks extra; the listing does not state a cover.
Sat, Oct 3 · 6:30–8:30 p.m. · The Yardarm, Orleans
The performer’s dated schedule lists this Saturday engagement as Dave / Right to Go Left. A compact evening slot for anyone keeping the weekend close to Orleans. Food and drinks extra; no cover amount is published in the schedule.
Wed, Oct 7 · 6:30–8:30 p.m. · Crown & Anchor Restaurant, 247 Commercial Street
Vocals, piano, bass and drums in the restaurant. Keep the room straight when making plans: this is a restaurant engagement, distinct from the venue’s other performance spaces. Food and drinks extra; the artist schedule does not list a cover.
Fri, Oct 2 · 5–6 p.m. · Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main Street
An early-evening open mic, with the library as the gathering place. It fills a different niche from the ticketed concerts: a short local stop before dinner. The dated calendar supplies the hour but does not publish performer sign-up rules; call 508-349-0310 if you want to take part.
Sat, Oct 3 · 7 p.m.; doors 6 p.m. · Payomet Tent, Highlands Center, 29 Old Dewline Road, North Truro
Kofi Baker, Malcolm Bruce and Rob Johnson revisit the music of Cream. Tickets $33–43 including fees; members $27–39. Add $5 on the day of the show. Full ticket terms.
Fri–Sat, Oct 2–3 · 7:30 p.m. each night · The 204 Cultural Arts Municipal Building, 204 Sisson Road
McKinney draws his stand-up from marriage, parenting, midlife and years in New England. The host now lists two performances: Friday tickets or Saturday tickets. Choose the date deliberately.
🌿 Nature & History
Sat, Oct 3 · 1–2 p.m. · Brooks Free Library, Thornton Meeting Room, 739 Main Street
Cape Cod history through its people, places and events, with Setterlund’s book available to buy. Free; registration required through the linked event page. A local-history afternoon without the museum talk’s separate admission charge.
There are several ways to read the Cape this week: follow an eel’s migration, hike a kettle-pond landscape, look at coastal fish restoration, or hear what one local farm has meant over time. Not every nature outing requires hiking boots.
Thu, Oct 1 · 1–2 p.m. · Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, 869 Main Street (Route 6A)
Aquarist Sam Remillard follows the American eel’s remarkable journey between freshwater and the Sargasso Sea. $5 members; $10 nonmembers. Museum admission is additional.
Sat, Oct 3 · 9:30–11 a.m. · Meet at 80 Bakers Pond Road
A roughly three-mile hike around the kettle pond and Huckleberry Hill with Orleans Conservation Trust and Orleans Recreation. Pre-register; spaces limited. Under-16s need adult supervision.
Mon, Oct 5 · 1:30–2:30 p.m. · Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main Street
A book talk about sea-run brook trout, Cape Cod’s coastal streams and the people working to restore them.
Fri, Oct 2 · 9 a.m. · Highland Center campus; park on Old Dew Line Road, North Truro
Explore local sights and history with Library Director Chris, and chat about books, viewing recommendations and library services as you walk. Meeting point is at Highland Center, not the library.
Mon, Oct 5 · 4–5 p.m. · Mayo House, 540 Main Street
Chatham Conservation Foundation discusses Tom Wessels’s guide to interpreting New England woods. Reading signs of past land use changes what you notice on an ordinary walk: the landscape holds a history beyond the trees standing today. Free; no registration required.
Wed, Oct 7 · 6:30 p.m.; doors 6 p.m. · Snow Library, 67 Main Street
Town representatives and local farmers discuss the property’s evolution and its roles in farming, habitat, recreation and climate resilience. Registration link on the organizer’s event page.
Sat, Oct 3 · 1–4 p.m. · Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, 291 Route 6, South Wellfleet
Musicians, poets and storytellers perform along the All Persons Trail, with a changing lineup each hour. The paths accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. Included with membership or regular sanctuary admission.
📚 Talks, Books & Big Ideas
Wed, Oct 7 · 10:30 a.m.–noon · Provincetown Public Library, 356 Commercial Street
The opening of a seven-week facilitated group, with reflection, reading, writing or drawing, and voluntary conversation through bell hooks’s All About Love. Register at [email protected]; space limited. Bring a notebook and pen. This is a series commitment, rather than a single author lecture.
Poetry, art history, baseball and school segregation, caregiving, and national parks all have specific dates. These are reasons to return to the calendar after the weekend, rather than a generic list of author appearances.
Thu, Oct 1 · 5:30–6:30 p.m. · Brewster Ladies’ Library, 1822 Main Street
Bonanni launches his debut poetry collection, winner of the Donald Hall Prize, then talks with Cronin about archives, history and ancestral memory. This is a chance to hear how a poem begins in research rather than treating a book launch as a signing line. Registration required.
Fri, Oct 2 · 2:30–4 p.m. · Brooks Free Library, 739 Main Street
The author examines the connections between Boston school segregation and the racial politics surrounding the Red Sox in the 1970s. Books will be available to buy. Free, in the Thornton Meeting Room; registration required through the linked event page.
Wed, Oct 7 · 2–3:30 p.m. · Brewster Ladies’ Library, 1822 Main Street
Librarian and teacher Anne Speyer looks at the history of book banning, including attacks on books in the United States. Presented with the library’s Banned Book Club. Keep this on the calendar if the week’s author events leave you thinking about who gets read—and who decides. Registration required.
Mon, Oct 5 · 2 p.m. · Eldredge Public Library, 564 Main Street
Art historian Mary C. Woodward follows Copley from an impoverished Boston childhood into the city’s highest social circles. Portraiture becomes a way of reading colonial ambition, status and the people behind the faces. Register; walk-ins accepted only if space permits.
Thu, Oct 1 · 5 p.m. · Eldredge Public Library, 564 Main Street
Sandra Barone, Christine Giuliano and Pamela Martorama discuss writing and the creative process, with audience questions and book signing. Register; walk-ins depend on space.

Steve Farrar, who has explored all 63 national parks, begins a three-session course with photographs and stories connecting landscape, geology, wildlife and history. Register for the course; suggested donation $10 per course. This is the opening session, not an isolated drop-in lecture.
Sun, Oct 4 · 1 p.m. · Farm Projects, 355 Main Street
An artist conversation with Janice Redman and naturalist and writer Elizabeth Bradfield, held alongside the REST exhibition.
Sat, Oct 3 · 2–3 p.m. · Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main Street
An afternoon poetry program with Good Harbor Poets. Give this one its own hour: it overlaps the sanctuary’s trail performances and the beginning of the Hall’s film screening, rather than serving as an automatic stop between them.
🎭 Theater & Film
Wed, Oct 7 · 5:30–7:30 p.m. · Provincetown Public Library, Marc Jacobs Reading Room, 356 Commercial Street
Gene Kelly and Van Johnson encounter a Scottish village with an unusual relationship to time in the 1954 musical. The library lists a two-hour screening window; the film itself runs 1 hour 48 minutes. A Wednesday evening on screen before the week is quite over.
One stage adaptation, one international shorts program, one circus-theater production and one filmed National Theatre performance: keep the format in mind when choosing your seat.
Thu–Sat, Oct 1–3 and Wed, Oct 7 · 7:30 p.m.; Sun, Oct 4 · 2 p.m. · Cape Rep Theatre
Gip Hoppe’s theatrical adaptation of Poe returns in a production honoring the late playwright. Thursday also has a 6:30 p.m. pre-show gathering in the Barn with members of the creative team. $40; $30 for ages 35 and under. PG-13; not recommended for children.

Payomet’s original circus-theater production brings acrobats, aerialists and jugglers to its Wellfleet location. Adults $35; ages 2–18 $25, including fees. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Sat, Oct 3 · 10:30 a.m. · Waters Edge Cinema, Provincetown
A cinema screening of the National Theatre production, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Victor Frankenstein in this showing. The theatrical performance is on screen, not an in-person appearance. It gives the day an unusually early arts anchor; tickets through the cinema’s current schedule.
👨👩👧 Family & Little Ones
A few exact sessions for children and the adults with them. The outdoor preschool exploration needs a reservation; Eastham’s listed library sessions do not. Ages and grown-up participation matter more than a vague “family friendly” label.
Mon, Oct 5 · 9:30–11 a.m. · Orleans conservation land; meeting directions supplied to registrants
Naturalist Andrea Higgins leads children ages 2–5 and their grown-ups on a sensory exploration of the outdoors. Reserve one space per child; use the waitlist if full.

🌊 Out Toward the Tip
Eastham: Tuesday’s windmill painting session runs 8–10:30 a.m. and closes the guild’s scheduled season. Saturday’s Fairy Tale Library Lab gives families an 11 a.m.–noon outing; Friday’s Poetry Roundtable is for people bringing work to read and discuss. These are different invitations, not one all-purpose library recommendation.
Wellfleet: The busy afternoon is Saturday, but Monday lunch and the 1:30 p.m. trout talk make a good return trip. Wednesday’s Poems & Photos: A Caregiver’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s keeps the arts connected to the experience of caregiving.
Truro: Friday’s Walk & Talk meets at Highland Center, not the library. Saturday’s bookmark craft session and technology appointments are at 7 Standish Way. Wednesday brings pharmacist assistance to that same library address.
Provincetown: The farmers’ market starts at 9 a.m. Saturday; the cinema screening starts at 10:30. Market shopping fits before the film if you keep an eye on the clock and handle your purchases. Tuesday’s reading and Wednesday’s restaurant jazz make separate reasons to come back.
🗓 The Week Beyond the Weekend
Day | A daytime anchor | A later option |
|---|---|---|
Mon, Oct 5 | Hospice introduction · Harwich · 11 a.m. | Forested Landscape book club · Chatham · 4–5 p.m. |
Tue, Oct 6 | Home-energy assessments · Harwich · 1:30 p.m. or National-parks course · Chatham · 1:30–3 p.m. | Nealon reading · Provincetown · 5:30–6:30 p.m. |
Wed, Oct 7 | Book-banning history · Brewster · 2–3:30 p.m. | Putnam Farm discussion · Orleans · 6:30 p.m. or Poems & Photos: A Caregiver’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s · Wellfleet · 6–7 p.m. |
Arthur’s note: Leave a little slack in the plan. A concert start is not a parking time, and a support-group listing is not a promise that you can walk into an established series. The dates here are October 1–7 only; use the organizer links for the choice you actually make.
