Harwich Port's Clinic Closed Oct. 23. Next Visit, Maybe Video.

HARWICH PORT · EAST ORLEANS · WHAT CHANGES FOR PATIENTS

OCHS says its East Orleans site opens in November. Until then, the Harwich Port pharmacy is closed and its Quest lab is done.

6 min read · A Celebrate Lower Cape spotlight

Family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, substance use treatment, insurance counselors, a Quest lab, and a pharmacy. Outer Cape Health Services still lists every one of them on its page for the two-story health center at 710 Route 28, across from Saquatucket Harbor.

That building, about 33,000 square feet by the Chronicle's measure, served about 10,000 patients, making it OCHS's largest site, WCAI reported in July. Its replacement is a former private practice at 204 Main St. in East Orleans, a move CLC first flagged in June.

So what changes for a patient between now and the day Orleans opens? OCHS answers most of it in a two-page letter to patients posted to its site Oct. 20. The move is happening in steps, and two of them are already behind you.

IN THIS STORY

  1. Thursday at noon, then Friday

  2. If your visit moved, they call you

  3. "Encouraged," in bold

  4. Not the only service that left

  5. The day nobody has posted

Thursday at noon, then Friday

The lab went first. The Quest site inside the Harwich Port building had its last day Thursday, Oct. 22, and the banner on OCHS's site says it closed after noon. The letter points to two other Quest locations: 1421 Orleans Road (Route 39) in East Harwich, and 923 Main St. (Route 6A) in Yarmouth Port.

The clinic followed the next day. "The final day of operations at the Harwich Port clinic will be Friday, October 23rd," the letter says. Starting Monday, Oct. 26, it says, the Harwich Port team works remotely while OCHS's facilities crew moves equipment, supplies, and medications to Orleans.

If your visit moved, they call you

OCHS says some provider appointments will have to be rescheduled, and provider schedules will carry extra telehealth for now. If yours is affected, the letter says, someone from the front desk will contact you about options. If you haven't heard and you have an appointment coming up, call.

A canceled preventive visit may be swapped for a telehealth appointment in the meantime. The letter lists needs it says a telehealth or office visit can handle: annual lab orders, referrals, medication refills, going over results, and talking through health concerns.

For in-person care during the move, OCHS says its team can book you with an access clinician at its Wellfleet Health Center, "when appropriate." For urgent needs, the letter names Cape Cod Healthcare Urgent Care on Long Pond Drive in Harwich and CareWell Urgent Care in South Dennis. It doesn't mention the Provincetown health center as part of the stopgap.

"Encouraged," in bold

The Harwich Port pharmacy is closed during the move; the site banner dates that to the week of Oct. 26. The letter gives three ways to keep a prescription moving: transfer it to OCHS's Wellfleet pharmacy, transfer it to an outside pharmacy, or switch to OCHS's mail service.

The mail option is the one the letter marks "Encouraged," in bold. To set it up, the letter says to call the Harwich Port pharmacy line, (774) 237-9000, and the pharmacy team will help with the transfer.

The June issue that carried the first word the building across from Saquatucket would empty out.

Not the only service that left

Both OCHS location pages, the Harwich Port one and a new Orleans Health Center page, still list WIC. OCHS's own WIC page says otherwise: as of July 1, 2026, OCHS no longer runs WIC on site. The program now sits with Cape Cod WIC, part of Health Imperatives. OCHS's page lists a Harwich satellite office and tells families to call the Hyannis main site, 508-771-7896, for scheduling.

The Orleans page lists the same primary care and behavioral health menu as Harwich Port: family and adult medicine, pediatrics, adolescent health, psychiatry, psychology, and substance use treatment. It lists Quest and a pharmacy too, but as of Oct. 28 its pharmacy link goes back to the Harwich Port pharmacy page, with no Orleans pharmacy phone or hours.

The day nobody has posted

In June, OCHS said Harwich Port would close Oct. 31 and Orleans would open Nov. 1, as the Provincetown Independent reported. The patient letter is looser about the far end: "We will be in the Orleans Clinic in November." As of Oct. 28, neither the relocation notice nor the Orleans page gives an opening day. Nov. 1 is a Sunday, a day the Orleans page lists as closed. The hours posted there are the plan for the new site, not a sign that it's seeing patients yet.

The new space is smaller by design. CEO Damian Archer told the Independent it goes "from about 16 exam rooms to about seven," in 3,701 square feet. In an April interview with the paper, he said OCHS wanted up to half its primary care delivered by phone or video by the end of 2026, up from about 10 percent, and that it's "always the patient's choice" whether to accept a telehealth visit.

You may have to wait longer for in-person.

Damian Archer, OCHS chief executive, to the Provincetown Independent, April 2026

OCHS told WCAI it expected no gap in primary care. Access was already tight: in April, the Independent reported a waiting list of about 400 people in Harwich hoping to become regular OCHS patients.

On why the building is emptying, the Chronicle reported in June that OCHS wanted to shrink to one floor and couldn't reach a new lease with the owners. "In the end…it didn't work out between us," board president Larry Ballantine told the paper. One of the owners told the Chronicle by email that it was premature to discuss the building's future use.

The lease on the Route 28 building runs out Saturday, Oct. 31, by the Independent's July account.
