The Week on the Lower Cape
April 30 - May 06, 2026: Brewster turns 40. Hog Island reopens. And one quiet Friday morning by the water at Red River Beach might be the best thing on this entire list.

Route 6A gets its first real traffic of the season. Brewster in Bloom turns 40 this weekend — the parade, the craft show, the 5K, the open houses — and all of it happens at once on Saturday.
Elsewhere: Hog Island reopens Friday night with The Boston Naturals, Cape Rep opens 9-Ball on Wednesday for its 25th anniversary, Syd Straw plays Parish Park for free on Saturday afternoon, and two town meetings — Harwich and Brewster, both Monday — happen on the same night. It's a week that asks something of you. Most of the best things are free.
✦ Don't Sleep On This
Three events this week that are easy to miss and hard to forget.
✦ 9-Ball at Cape Rep Theatre — Opening Night May 6, 2026 · 7:30 PM · Cape Rep Theatre, Brewster · $40
Art Devine's 9-Ball is back for its 25th anniversary, and it opens Wednesday night at Cape Rep. The play is set in 1967 around a single game of pool — one table, one night, everything on the line. It's the kind of drama that earns its tension slowly and then doesn't let go. Cape Rep doesn't bring a show back for its 25th anniversary unless it has earned that. Opening night is Wednesday. If you've been meaning to go to Cape Rep, this is the week to stop meaning to.
✦ Reopening Night with The Boston Naturals at Hog Island — First Night Back May 1, 2026 · 6:00 PM–9:00 PM · Orleans Hog Island Brewery, Orleans · Free
Hog Island closed for the winter and opens again Friday. The Boston Naturals — a longtime Cape favorite built for danceable covers across four decades of rock and pop — are there for the reopening. This is one of those Friday nights where the room fills up because the room wants to fill up. No cover. Show up early.
✦ Live Music Pop-Up Practice: Syd Straw — Free, Outdoors, One Hour May 2, 2026 · 1:00 PM–2:00 PM · Parish Park, Orleans · Free
Syd Straw has been making folk-rock and blues-rock since the 1980s and has a following that knows exactly who she is. She's playing Parish Park on Saturday afternoon for one hour, for free, in the open air. There is no reason not to go. If you happen to be in Orleans on Saturday and you walk past Parish Park at 1:00 PM without stopping, you will think about it later.

Last week on the Lower Cape
The Chatham Orpheum's Arts Week screenings drew steady crowds through the school break, and both the 14th Annual Beautify Brewster and the Tour de Trash filled their volunteer rosters and then some — the kind of turnout that reminds you the year-round community is paying attention. The Alison Brown Quintet at the Chatham Orpheum sold the room: intricate banjo-led chamber music in a theater built for it. And the Harwich Herring Run 5K went off Saturday morning in weather that cooperated just enough.
Your event belongs here
This list exists because people in Brewster, Chatham, Harwich, and Orleans are doing things worth knowing about. If you're running one of them — a class, a concert, a walk, a workshop, a dinner, an opening, a town meeting, a kids' program, a community gathering — send it to us.
We read every submission. We don't charge for listings. We don't favor big venues over small ones. If it's happening on the Lower Cape and it's worth a neighbor's time, it has a real shot at being in the next issue.
What to send: event name, date, time, location, price (or free), and a link or a few sentences about what it actually is. That's it.
Deadline: Monday at noon for that Thursday's issue.

The people who read this newsletter are locals. They show up. Getting in front of them costs you nothing but two minutes and an email.
