The Week the Cape Explains Itself to Itself

Last week the Lower Cape passed the hat. This week it opens the book.

There is no committee that arranges this and no theme anybody announced, but look at seven days of listings and the pattern is unmistakable. A historical society gives its annual meeting to a novelist to talk about turning a record into a sentence. A theater screens the 1952 rescue for free and then puts the writer who reconstructed it on the same stage three hours later. A cemetery tour, a spy who died before his war, a book about the people this place kept off its own ledger, an hour on what happened to Truro's clams, a windmill talk about the men who kept its gears turning. Eleven separate events between Thursday and Wednesday in which somebody stands up in a public room and explains this place to the people who live in it.

The visitors are still here. The water is at its annual warmest. The light goes at 7:44 and is losing a minute a day. And out at the tip, Provincetown Carnival opens Saturday and starts building toward a parade that lands the Thursday after this one — which is a different kind of story a place tells about itself, told louder.

Reading the week

Saturday is the heaviest day and Thursday is the best one. That's unusual, and it's worth planning around.

Thursday gives you the Casey Sherman double bill in Chatham at 4:30 and 7:00, Ben Shattuck at the Community Center at 5:00, Cape Harmony at St. Christopher's at 7:30, and Fran Lebowitz at Provincetown Town Hall — all in one evening, which means you have to choose, which is the definition of a good Thursday.

Saturday has the Festival, Monteverdi at 3:30, the Ponds Coalition at 8:30 in the morning, a cemetery tour at 10:00, an ice cream social at 6:30, and Carnival opening at the other end of the peninsula. Do not try to do the Cape end and the tip end on the same Saturday. You will spend it on Route 6.

Pick a spine before you leave the house. Three work this week:

• Chatham, all day Saturday — Festival at Chase Park, the labyrinth in the same park, pottery open studio at the Creative Arts Center, then Monomoy on Sunday morning for the shorebird count.

• Brewster–Orleans, Friday into Saturday — Songs of the Silver Screen at Our Lady of the Cape Friday at 7:00, Monteverdi in Orleans Friday at 7:30 (pick one), then Saturday: Stony Brook Gristmill, the Ponds Coalition breakfast, the Orleans Farmers Market, Monteverdi's matinee at 3:30, the ice cream social at 6:30.

• Harwich, Monday through Wednesday — Art in the Park Monday, gazebo concert Monday evening, town band Tuesday, and Port Summer Nights Wednesday, which is the week's best free night on the Lower Cape.

Plan around nights, not day counts. Sunday and Monday are the quiet days; use them.

This Week's Headlines

The Festival turns fifty-five. The Creative Arts Center has been putting 100-plus juried artists under tents in Chase Park since 1971 and has never charged admission. Three days, Friday to Sunday, and the difference between going Friday morning and going Saturday afternoon is roughly the difference between a conversation and a queue.

Carnival opens at the tip and the Lower Cape goes quiet. The 48th Provincetown Carnival — Deep Sea Disco — starts Saturday and runs a week. The parade is next Thursday, outside this window. Expect Route 6 to be unpleasant northbound from Friday afternoon and expect Sunday on the Lower Cape to feel like a shoulder-season Sunday, which is a gift if you know to use it.

Two lobster-roll fundraisers, same Friday, twelve miles apart. Christ Episcopal in Harwich, 11:00 to 2:00, with a silent auction alongside. First United Methodist in Chatham, 11:30 to 1:30. Neither is a restaurant. Both are a building trying to reach February.

America 250 is running quietly in Orleans. The Church of the Transfiguration has an outdoor panel exhibit up all week, free and walkable at your own pace, and the Orleans Historical Society puts Revolution and 1812 artifacts on the table at the Meetinghouse Friday through Sunday. This is the low-key version of an anniversary that will be much louder next summer.

The Cape Cod Baseball League season is over. Harwich beat Bourne 4–2 at Whitehouse Field on Wednesday the 12th to take the championship. Ten weeks of free evenings on a hill behind a backstop, done for the year. The fields go quiet until June and the town gets its parking back.

Summer reading is wrapping up. Eastham's End of Summer Reading Ice Cream Party is Saturday morning; the Brewster book sale ends Saturday; Chase Library's outdoor sale is Friday. School starts in three weeks and the libraries know it.

Don't Sleep On This

Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers of the Blessed Virgin — Orleans, Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Understand what this is. The Vespro della Beata Vergine is roughly ninety minutes of music written in 1610 for forces most institutions cannot field — multiple choirs, soloists, cornetts and sackbuts, an organ, and a building that can hold all of it without turning it to mud. Major cities program it once a decade. Gloriæ Dei Cantores and Incantare are doing it twice in one weekend in a town with six thousand year-round residents, in a church that was built with exactly this sound in mind.

Forty-five dollars. Friday at 7:30, Saturday at 3:30. Take the Saturday matinee if you want a seat and the Friday night if you want the room full and the light going through the windows on the west side. A church fills from the back; get there early if you actually want to hear the cornetts. This is the most ambitious thing happening on this peninsula this week and it is not close.

An Evening with Casey Sherman, preceded by a free screening of The Finest Hours — Chatham Orpheum, Thursday.

The tanker Pendleton broke in half four miles off Chatham in February 1952 and thirty-two men came off the stern in a thirty-six-foot motor lifeboat rated to carry twelve. Bernie Webber took CG-36500 over the bar in a nor'easter with a broken compass. The boat is still here — you can see it, restored, on Wednesday's lighthouse tour.

The Orpheum screens the film at 4:30 for nothing and puts Sherman, who wrote the book, on stage at 7:00. Do both. The film is a Disney film and takes the liberties a Disney film takes; the man at seven o'clock is the one who read the transcripts. Watching it in the town it happened to, with the researcher in the building, is the whole argument for why local history should be done locally.

The 55th Annual Festival of the Arts — Chase Park, Chatham, Friday to Sunday.

Fifty-five years, 135 juried artists, three days, no admission charge. The Creative Arts Center could gate this and nobody would blink; it doesn't, and hasn't since 1971. Go Friday morning or late Sunday. The art is identical on Saturday; the difference is whether you can stand in front of a booth long enough to ask the maker a question, which is the only thing a festival offers that a gallery cannot. Arts & Culture

Editorial pick — Land, Sea and Sky Art Reception (Brewster). Twenty miles up the road on the same weekend, Chase Park will be wall-to-wall with the Festival of the Arts and the crowd that follows it, which is exactly why this one matters. A library reception is where a Cape artist gets shown to the people who will still be here in February, not to the people renting in Wellfleet through Labor Day. Stefanie Allen's acrylics and oil pastels are hanging in the same room where the book club meets, and she will be standing next to them, which is a kind of exposure no booth at a festival provides. There is no admission, no line, no tent, and no one working a sale. Go for the last hour, when the crowd thins and the artist has time to actually talk. Editorial pick — Quahog Clamshell Weaving Workshop (Brewster). A hundred and sixty-two dollars is a lot of money for an afternoon, and it is worth saying so out loud rather than pretending otherwise. What you are buying is three hours of someone teaching you to do something with the single most abundant object on this peninsula — the thing already in your driveway, under your boots, stacked behind every raw bar between here and Wellfleet. Almost every craft class on the Cape this week teaches a technique that would work identically in Ohio. This one does not. It starts from a quahog shell, which means it starts from here. Editorial pick — Summer Church Fair (Harwich). Cash only. That single detail tells you everything about who this is built for and what it costs to run. First Congregational puts out tables, food and whatever the congregation has made or can spare, and the five hours it stays open are how a building with a slate roof and an oil burner gets through a Cape winter. Provincetown Carnival opens the day before, which will thin the Sunday crowd on this end of the peninsula considerably — meaning this fair will be mostly people who live here, talking to each other. Editorial pick — Lobster Roll Lunch and Silent Auction (Harwich). Two churches are selling lobster rolls on Friday — Christ Episcopal in Harwich and First United Methodist in Chatham — which is either a scheduling accident or evidence that everyone on the Lower Cape has independently arrived at the same fundraising math. Go to this one, because the silent auction running alongside it is a congregation's connections laid out on a table: dinners, experiences, things somebody made. There is a version of this lunch on Main Street with a patio and a thirty-eight-dollar price, and it is a perfectly good sandwich. This one is a building staying open. Editorial pick — Grief Support Group with Maureen Keane-Bottino (Brewster). This is the hardest hour on the Lower Cape calendar this week and the only one on this list that changes anything. It is specifically for people whose spouse has died, which is a narrower and more useful thing than a general grief group, because the room does not have to explain itself. It meets monthly in a library, free, facilitated by the same person every time — and that consistency is the entire mechanism. August is a cruel month to be widowed on Cape Cod; the town fills with other people's families and the quiet at home gets louder by contrast. The week in live music, night by night. Seven nights, four towns, and a run of bandstands that will be folded up and stored by the end of September. Most of it costs nothing. Click any name for the where-and-when.

Thursday belongs to the voices. Cape Harmony — ten singers, all treble, a Cape institution that ages out and refills itself every summer — takes the A. Elmer Crowell Auditorium at St. Christopher's in Chatham at half past seven, $15, doors at seven. A church fills from the back; get there early if you want to actually hear the blend.

Friday is the bandstand night. The Chatham Town Band plays the Whit Tileston Bandstand at Kate Gould Park at eight, free — marches, sing-alongs, the children's dances — and it is the single most reliably good hour of civic life on the Lower Cape. Earlier, in Harwich, the Sound Dunes Concert for Veterans takes Brooks Park at six for one hour. In Brewster, Songs of the Silver Screen fills Our Lady of the Cape at seven for its fifth year — a century of movie music sung live, donation at the door, proceeds to Cape food pantries. And Donny Nolan plays piano in the Grand Hall at Ocean Edge from six to nine, no cover, Friday and again Saturday. Bar-side: The Barley Neck in Orleans at half past eight, and DJ Press working the Squire's floor from ten.

Saturday goes quiet on the formal side and loud on the informal one. Nolan is back at the Mansion six to nine. Bar-side: Hog Island in Orleans from six with the raw bar going, and The Barley Neck again at half past eight.

Sunday is the day the choirs and the community bands share. The Pilgrim Church Choir and Friends perform John Rutter's Requiem at Pilgrim Congregational in Harwich Port at ten in the morning, inside the service — a working choir doing a serious piece, which is a different animal from a concert. In the late afternoon the Rod & Robby Jazz Bros close their summer series at Cape Cod Covenant Church in Brewster at five, free. Then the Brewster Band takes Drummer Boy Park at six, free — marches, Broadway, film music, weather permitting. Bring a chair. Everyone else will have one.

Monday is the beach-concert night. Frank Poranski & the Pollyannas play the Nauset Beach Gazebo from half past six to half past eight, food trucks on site, the Atlantic doing the low end. Simultaneously in Harwich, the Front Street Jazz Ensemble takes the Brooks Park Gazebo from six to half past seven, free. Two gazebos, one hour, twelve miles apart — pick by which parking lot you can live with.

Tuesday is the strongest weeknight of the seven. Hyannis Sound, the professional collegiate a cappella group, sings St. Christopher's at seven, $15. Rose Clancy's Tuesday Night Fiddle runs at the Chatham Drama Guild from half past seven, from $10 — Celtic tunes, guest players, stories between, the closest thing the Lower Cape has to a session with a roof. And the Harwich Town Band plays the Brooks Park Bandstand from seven, free: volunteers, big-band charts, light classics.

Wednesday is the sprawl. Port Summer Nights puts local musicians at rotating spots along Route 28 in Harwich Port, five to eight, free — Wednesday night in August in a village that spends nine months being a stretch of road you drive through. Pans in Paradise plays steel drums at Rock Harbor from six until the sun goes into the bay. Indoors and formal: Monica Berney plays Bach, Brahms, Vierne and Kapustin on the St. Cecilia organ at the Church of the Transfiguration at half past seven, $40. And the Cape Cod Jazz Festival's Radio Recall puts two Broadway performers on Wequassett's lawn at half past six, $95.

Nature & History

Editorial pick — Pine Grove Cemetery Walking Tour (Harwich). The Harwich Historical Society could run this as a stroll among old stones and nobody would object. It doesn't. It runs it as biography — a named person per marker, what they did, what happened to them, who was left. This is the week for it. Between the spy at the Ladies' Library, the book about the people the Cape left out of its own story, and the 1952 rescue screened in the town where the boat broke apart, the Lower Cape spends these seven days telling its history back to itself, and a cemetery is where that history is filed. Historical societies usually spend their annual meeting on the treasurer's report and a slideshow of the collection. Theater & Classical

Editorial pick — Girl from the North Country (Brewster). Conor McPherson did the thing everyone said couldn't be done: he used Bob Dylan's catalogue without making a jukebox musical out of it. The songs don't advance the plot or explain a character's feelings — they interrupt, sideways, the way weather does, and the effect in a small room is closer to a wake than to a show. Cape Rep's indoor house is small enough that this lands the way it's supposed to. Fifty-six dollars is real money and this is a genuinely hard evening about a Depression-era guesthouse full of people running out of options, so know what you're buying. But it is the most ambitious thing on a Lower Cape stage this week, and the Wednesday matinee at two is the residents' slot — half-empty, air-conditioned, and yours. Theaters do this for a reason: they'd rather have a full room and your goodwill than eleven empty seats and their dignity. Which means the week's best seats are the ones nobody's booked, on the nights nobody's thinking about.

Out Toward the Tip

The Lower Cape spends this week doing what it does every week in August — concerts on greens, band shells, library lawns. Provincetown spends it building something. The 48th Annual Provincetown Carnival opens Saturday under the theme Deep Sea Disco, and the whole town tilts toward it: pool parties, harbor cruises, a 5K in costume, a headliner concert at Town Hall on Wednesday. The parade itself lands the following Thursday, outside this window — which means what you get between now and Wednesday the 19th is the build, the part locals actually prefer. Meanwhile Truro and Wellfleet are doing something close to the opposite: cemetery tours, a National Book Award novelist at a town library, Hamlet on the beach, a land trust's annual meeting, an hour on the history of oysters.

Provincetown

Fran Lebowitz takes Town Hall on Thursday night, and the appeal is precisely that nothing is prepared. She talks, someone asks a question, she takes it apart. Town Hall is a big room with hard surfaces and no forgiveness, which suits a performer whose entire instrument is timing. Get there early enough to sit where you can hear the consonants. Carnival opens Saturday night with Occupy the Deep Sea Disco at the Crown & Anchor, and it is worth saying plainly what this week is: the 48th year of an event that pays a meaningful share of this town's annual bills. The theme is silly on purpose — sequined jellyfish, disco kelp, whatever people built in a garage in July. The costumes are not a novelty act; they are a forty-eight-year craft tradition with a deadline. The Author Talk with Susan Choi at Truro Public Library on Tuesday is the sort of booking a town library gets maybe once a decade. Choi won the National Book Award; she could be reading anywhere. Instead she'll be in a room in Truro with perhaps eighty chairs and a Q&A that will go wherever the room takes it. Small libraries land these because someone on staff wrote a letter and meant it. 🎸 The Wallflowers — Jakob Dylan's band under the tent, playing a catalog that has aged considerably better than its era. Wellfleet

Hamlet on Monday night at Mayo Beach Pavilion, staged by KnightHorse Theatre, on a donation. Outdoor Shakespeare usually means Shakespeare you can't hear, but the pavilion sits with its back to the harbor and the wind mostly cooperates by seven. Bring a low chair and a sweater — the temperature drops fifteen degrees during the third act, every time. The cemetery tours are the best history programming on the Outer Cape and nobody talks about them. Eastham

The Outermost House Guided History Walk on Saturday morning covers a building that no longer exists. Henry Beston's shack was swept off Coast Guard Beach in the Blizzard of '78, and the walk takes you to where it stood and explains why the book it produced still shapes conservation law. Eastham is the town everyone drives through on the way to the tip. It is also the town where the windmill, the marsh and the beach that swallowed Beston's house all sit within four miles of each other. Attention isn't a talent out here. It's mileage.

The visitor reads this grid once, in August, and forgets it. The rest of us live in it — and it is the same grid in February, minus the crowd, which is when it's actually good.

Editor's note

Nobody scheduled this week to be about memory. The Chatham Historical Society picked its speaker in March, the Orpheum booked Casey Sherman around a film print, the genealogical society has met on the third Tuesday for years, and Snow Library invited Susanna Graham-Pye because her book came out. And yet here it all is in the same seven days: a spy, a shipwreck, a cemetery, a windmill, a bay that used to have clams in it, and a book about the names this place left off its own list.

That is what a small place does in the last full week before it starts letting go of the summer. It counts what it has. Then out at the tip a town puts on sequins and counts what it made.

Next week: Carnival's parade lands Thursday and Commercial Street shuts down for it. The Lower Cape gets its quietest Thursday since June. And the first of the fall farmers markets start posting their end dates.
