The Week on the Lower Cape — June 4–10, 2026
✦ Don't Sleep On This Three events this week that are easy to miss and hard to forget.
✦ The Movement of Light: A Baroque Journey — Chamber/Baroque Concert · June 6, 2026 · 7:30 PM / June 7, 2026 · 3:30 PM · Church of the Transfiguration, Orleans · $35
The Church of the Transfiguration held the St. Matthew Passion last weekend — two orchestras, two choirs, nearly two and a half hours of Bach. This weekend it holds something smaller and more focused.
Gaudete Baroque Ensemble arrives Saturday evening with "The Movement of Light: A Baroque Journey," a program built around the arc of a single day from dawn to dusk. Handel, Bach, Albinoni, Vivaldi. Strings, voice, and trumpet joined by harpsichord and chalumeau — the chalumeau being a wooden reed instrument that preceded the modern clarinet by nearly a century, with a sound somewhere between an oboe and something much older.
Two performances. Saturday at 7:30, inside the long June evening. Sunday at 3:30, in the full afternoon light the program takes as its own subject. That second choice is the one worth sitting with: light as both metaphor and literal condition, playing against the music in real time.
$35 for either performance. The church was built for this kind of listening.
✦ Provincetown's 9th Annual Pride Celebration — Community Celebration · June 4–7, 2026 · Various Times · Provincetown · Various
Provincetown sits at the tip of the Cape, and this Thursday it opens its ninth annual Pride celebration — four days that belong to the whole region, not just the town.
The week opens Thursday evening with a flag raising at the Pilgrim Monument at 7 PM. Saturday is the main day: the Pride Market runs from 1 to 5 along the street, the Pride Rally at Town Hall gathers at 3 and moves down Commercial Street in the Sashay to Tea, and the Boatslip hosts the official Tea Dance poolside from 4 to 7. Born This Way — a queer variety show — takes the stage Saturday evening at 8. Sunday closes with the Welltown 5K walk/run through town at 8:30 AM.
This is the ninth year. It fills the town and spills into the bay. If you've never made the drive to the tip for this weekend, make it this year. Stay for the dance.
✦ Chatham & 100 Years in the Cape Cod Baseball League — Historical Talk · June 9, 2026 · 5:00 PM · Atwood Museum Mural Barn, Chatham · $10
The Cape League teams arrive this week. Before the first pitch, there is a Tuesday evening at the Atwood Museum worth your time.
Cape Cod Baseball League historian Mike Richard has spent decades assembling the early history of the league — the summers before the current team names existed, the Cape towns that hosted games before the league had its modern structure, and the long path from a regional summer pastime to one of the country's most closely watched proving grounds for college players. His talk covers the first hundred years and gives particular attention to Chatham's role in building what the league became — the original Anglers and A's, the early rivalries, the conditions that made a small-town Cape tradition into something national.
The A's open their season in days. This is the context behind the box scores. Ten dollars, the Mural Barn, Tuesday at 5. Go before the season starts and you'll watch the games differently all summer.
