The Week on the Lower Cape

The last quiet week before the Fourth: two summer road races on back-to-back mornings, all four ballclubs home, the final farmers market opening, Chatham's History Month closing, and Provincetown blessing its fishing fleet for the 79th time.

A short note before the calendar. Last week the season committed; this week it catches its breath. June 25 through July 1 is the last genuinely quiet stretch you'll get — the water's finally swimmable, the flats still empty out to the horizon at low tide, and the crowds that own July haven't checked in yet. By next Saturday the Fourth arrives and takes the parking with it. So the Lower Cape spends this week getting its house in order: two road races, the town bands rehearsing their patriotic sets, the Cape League running all four clubs through home dates, the last market throwing open its first day, and out at the tip, the oldest summer ritual on the whole sandbar. Skim what you skim. Use the rest.

Reading the week

Saturday, June 27 is the heavy day — and it's heavy everywhere at once. A half-mile swim goes off at dawn at Nickerson; antique cars roll onto the Brewster Historical Society lawn; a bike parade rolls through Harwich; the Addison opens a show with a garden tour in Orleans; Wellfleet strolls its galleries at five; Eastham throws an arts festival on Windmill Green; and the Women's Music Festival lights up the Payomet tent. You can't do all of it. Pick one spine and let the rest go: Brewster–Harwich (race, car show, bike parade, town band), Orleans–Eastham (galleries, garden tour, arts festival, concerts on the green), or the Outer Cape (gallery stroll, Women's Music Festival, and Sunday's Blessing of the Fleet).

Sunday belongs to the second race and the fleet: the Chatham Harbor Run at 8 AM, and the 79th Blessing of the Fleet at MacMillan Pier in the early afternoon. Monday opens the Meeting House Chamber Music Festival's second concert in Orleans. Tuesday the town bands tune up for the Fourth and Hyannis Sound returns to St. Chris. Plan around your nights, not the day count.

This Week's Headlines

It's the last week before the Fourth. Everything this week happens in the lull before next weekend's crush — swimmable water, findable parking, and a Lower Cape that still feels like it belongs to the people who live here. Catch it while it lasts.

Two summer road races, back to back. The 27th Annual Cape Cod Against the Tide brings its swim/run/walk to Nickerson State Park Saturday at 7 AM for the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition; the next morning the 45th Chatham Harbor Run 10K & relay steps off from Monomoy Middle School at 8 AM for Monomoy Dollars for Scholars. Two mornings, two causes, one weekend the Lower Cape runs.

The Cape Cod Baseball League is deep into home rotation. All four local clubs play at home this week — the Brewster Whitecaps host at Stony Brook Field (Thu, Sat, Mon, Tue), the Chatham Anglers at Veterans Field (Fri, Sat, Tue), the Harwich Mariners at Whitehouse Field (Thu, Sat, Mon, Tue), and the Orleans Firebirds at Eldredge Park (Sat, Tue). Free, as always, save your snack-bar money. Bonus: the Mariners play beach baseball at Wequassett Tuesday morning.

The markets are all open now. The Harwich Farmers Market throws open its opening day Thursday at The 204 — the last of the Lower Cape markets to wake up for the season, joining Orleans (Sat), Chatham (Tue), Brewster's CSA (Wed) and the rest.

Chatham's History Month is in its final days. June as History Month wraps June 30 — last call for the Railroad Museum, the Marconi/RCA Wireless Museum, and the model trains running at the depot.

Brewster reopens its past. The volunteer-run Crosby Mansion starts summer open-house tours Tuesday, the same week the Historical Society's Cobb House and Windmill Village open for the season.

The Big Top is open. A week after the tent went up on the old WHAT campus, Payomet's Cirque by the Sea is running its first full summer show in Wellfleet — and Provincetown's Portuguese Festival fills the tip Friday through Sunday.

Don't Sleep On This

🏊 The 27th Annual Cape Cod Against the Tide — Nickerson State Park, Brewster · Sat, June 27 · 7 AM · From $40 There are prettier places to swim a half-mile than Cliff Pond at seven in the morning, but not many — and none of them are raising money to keep your neighbors well. The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's signature event has come to Nickerson for 27 years: a swim, a kayak, an aquathon, a run, a fitness walk, pick your distance. The pond is glass at that hour, the pines come down to the sand, and the whole thing is built around the same clean kettle-pond water you came to the Cape for. You'll be cold for ninety seconds and glad the rest of the day. Register here, or come back Sunday morning for the 45th Chatham Harbor Run and do the whole running weekend.

Provincetown Portuguese Festival & the 79th Blessing of the Fleet — MacMillan Pier, Provincetown · Fri–Sun, June 26–28 · Free (most events) The oldest and most beautiful summer ritual on Cape Cod. Three days of Portuguese food, music, folk dancing and homecoming build to Sunday's blessing, when the working boats line up at MacMillan Pier to be sent off for a safe and bountiful season by the bishop. The fleet is a fraction of what it once was, which is precisely the reason to stand on the pier and watch — this is a town honoring the industry that made it, in the years when that industry needs the honoring most. Pair it with the Center for Coastal Studies 50th-anniversary celebration at Town Hall Thursday night (free), and the tip is yours for the weekend.

🎻 Meeting House Chamber Music Festival: "Meeting the Moment!" Concert #2 — Church of the Holy Spirit, Orleans · Mon, June 29 · 7:30 PM · Ticketed The festival that opened last week settles into its season with a second program in one of the best acoustic rooms on the Lower Cape. Chamber music in an Orleans meeting house on a Monday night in late June is exactly what the off-crowd weeks are for: serious playing, an intimate room, and an audience that came to listen rather than be seen. If you missed the opener, this is the easiest possible door into the Cape's quieter cultural life before August buries it. Details here.

Arts & Culture

A weekend of openings and a garden tour, with the galleries leaning into receptions Saturday.

Editorial pick: 🎨 Held in the Light: Paul Batch Show & Orleans Garden Tour — Addison Art Gallery pairs a new show of Paul Batch's luminous landscapes with a self-guided tour of Orleans gardens in full early-summer bloom — art on the walls and the living thing it's painted from, all in one afternoon. Hands & Habits

The makers' week leans toward bees, brushes, and clay.

Editorial pick: 🐝 The Honey Bee Experience — Wequassett's resident beekeeping session takes you out to the hives, suited up, to see how a colony actually works — and why the Cape's pollinators matter to every garden and farm stand you'll visit this week. It's hands-on, genuinely fascinating, and not something you'll stumble into anywhere else. Fri, June 26 & Tue, June 30 · 10:00 AM · Wequassett Resort, Harwich · $60.

🧵 Boomerang Bags Sewing Bee — Sew reusable bags from donated fabric; all skill levels. Fri, June 26 · 1:00–4:00 PM · Brewster Ladies' Library · Free. 🐝 Outreach Table: Ask A Master Gardener — Volunteer Master Gardeners field plant questions. Community

Civic and family gravity all week, but the standout is a small one with training wheels.

Editorial pick: 🚲 Bike Wash & Bike Parade — Harwich Recreation runs a kids' bike wash and decorating station, then a parade around the community center grounds — a free, low-stakes, gloriously wholesome Saturday morning four days ahead of the Fourth. Streamers encouraged. This is the kind of thing the visitors never see and the kids remember. Sat, June 27 · 10:00 AM–12:00 PM · Harwich Community Center · Free.

🍦 Summer Kick-off Ice Cream Party — Free ice cream to launch the rec summer. Fri, June 26 · 1:00–2:00 PM · Harwich Community Center · Free. 🚗 British Car Club Car Show — Rows of vintage British motorcars. Sat, June 27 · 11:00 AM–2:00 PM · Lemon Tree Village Shops, Brewster. 🚂 Open House: Nauset Model Railroad Club — The club opens its layout to the public. Wed, July 1 · 6:00 PM · Hilltop Plaza (lower level), Orleans. 🏠 Annual House Tour — A self-guided tour of private Chatham homes. Sun, June 28 · 12:00–4:00 PM · Chatham. 🎪 Antiques Fair & Classic Car Show ✦ See the short edition — Sat, June 27 · 9 AM–3 PM · Brewster Historical Society · $6.

Food & Drink

Markets, lawns, and a brewery on the grass.

Editorial pick: 🍺 Summer Sampler Series: Devil's Purse Brewing Company — The Barley Neck's weekly lawn series keeps rolling, and this week it's South Dennis's Devil's Purse pouring on the grass in Orleans. The format — local maker, open lawn, easy early-evening crowd — is one of the most pleasant low-stakes nights on the Lower Cape right now, before the lawn goes elbow-to-elbow next month. Tue, June 30 · 4:30–7:00 PM · The Barley Neck, Orleans.

🥬 Harwich Farmers Market Opening Day ✦ See Headlines — Thu, June 25 · 3:00–6:00 PM · The 204, Harwich. 🦪 Cape Cod Oyster Bed Tour — A guided low-tide walk across the Brewster Flats oyster beds. Sat, June 27 · 4:00 PM · Ocean Edge Resort, Brewster. 🦞 Private Beach Clambake Experience — Chef-led lobster bake and bonfire on the private beach. Nightly · 5:30 PM · Chatham Bars Inn · From $1,200. 🎵 Port Summer Nights — Wednesday-night live music up and down Route 28. Health & Wellness

Beach yoga at dawn all week; one standout indoors.

Editorial pick: 🧘 Connecting in Nature through QiGong — A slow, breath-first hour of QiGong led outdoors on Harwich conservation land — gentle movement in exactly the kind of quiet morning setting that's hardest to find once July arrives. Beginners welcome; the location comes after you register. Thu, June 25 · 10:00–11:00 AM · Harwich (location on registration) · $20.

Peak trail-and-shore season, plus the final days of Chatham's History Month.

Editorial pick: 🐦 Forest Beach Conservation Bird Walk — The Cape Cod Bird Club leads a free early-morning walk through the Forest Beach Conservation Area in South Chatham — old salt-works marsh, scrub, and shoreline that's quietly one of the better summer birding spots on the Lower Cape. Talks, Books & Big Ideas

A standout local-history hour, plus the library circuit.

Editorial pick: 📖 Marcellus Eldredge: Catalyst for the Chatham We Know ✦ Also in the short edition's 5 picks — Amy Andreasson and Gil Sparks dig into the brewer-banker-philanthropist whose name is on the library hosting the talk, and whose ambitions shaped a startling amount of the Chatham everyone now photographs. Local history done right is gossip with footnotes — and the Eldredge story has plenty of both, from Gilded-Age fortune to civic legacy. Thu, June 25 · 5:00 PM · Eldredge Public Library, Chatham · Free.

Theater & Classical

Two productions of the same Stoppard farce, a closing comedy, and Monday's chamber concert.

Editorial pick: 🎭 Cactus Flower at the Chatham Drama Guild — Abe Burrows' classic Broadway comedy — a dentist, his assistant, and a tangle of romantic lies — winds toward the end of its run on the Guild's stage. It's light, fast, and exactly the kind of community-theater night that's been a Chatham summer fixture for generations. Evenings 7:30 PM; Sunday matinee 4:00 PM · Chatham Drama Guild · Ticketed.

Editor's note + next week

This is the hinge. By the time you read the next issue the Fourth will be on top of us — the fireworks barges anchored off the harbors, the parades lining up, the parking gone until Labor Day. Everything August is famous for is already here this week; it just still has its quiet on, and a kettle pond you can have mostly to yourself at seven in the morning.

Next week: the Fourth of July across all four towns — parades, fireworks, the band concerts that have been rehearsing all month, and the first true Saturday crush of the season. We'll have the full map.

Forward this to someone still on the fence about coming down. The week before the Fourth is the one the locals keep for themselves — and it doesn't get quieter than this.
