The Week on the Lower Cape
Bach in Orleans. The fleet in Chatham. Brewster's market opens. And a Sunday that fills up before you plan it.

You forget how long it stays light.
June arrives Thursday and the sun doesn't quit until almost nine. Every year it catches you off guard — some color left in the west, the day still warm, nowhere you absolutely have to be. You'd forgotten this was coming.
This week carries weight. Friday and Saturday, Gloriæ Dei Cantores and Creare Symphonia perform Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans — double choir, double orchestra, solo voices, and nearly two and a half hours of the most serious music the composer ever wrote. Sunday, the Chatham fishing fleet gathers at the Fish Pier to be blessed. The Brewster Farmers Market opens its 2026 season at Windmill Village. And somewhere between those things, the week keeps finding more to say.
Saturday runs long. The Orleans Farmers Market opens at 9. An Eco-Restoration Tour at Cold Brook Preserve goes from 9 to 10:30. A Different Drummer Craft Fair opens in Brewster at 10. Chandler Travis brings a free Philharmonette-style set to Parish Park at 1. J Place plays blues, soul, and rock at Snow Library at 2. Miss Emily Sings the Blues at Brick Hill House Concerts at 7:30. The Grab Brothers are at Hog Island at 6. Catie Flynn takes The Barley Neck at 8:30. And at 7:30 — the second night of Bach.
Sunday has the same problem. The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra closes its Sandbar Series with Brahms and Shostakovich at St. Christopher's in Chatham at 3. The Outer Cape Chorale Chamber Singers play a free a cappella concert at Cape Cod Covenant Church in Brewster at 5. Walk for Hope leaves from Hog Island Brewery at noon. The Blessing of the Fleet is at 2. The Revolutionary War Experience opens at Windmill Village right after the farmers market. You will have to choose.
This is a week that earns its full attention.
✦ Don't Sleep On This Three events this week that are easy to miss and hard to forget.
✦ J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion — Choral/Orchestral Concert · May 29 + May 30, 2026 · 7:30 PM – 10:15 PM · Church of the Transfiguration, Orleans · $45
Bach called it his greatest work. He was not wrong.
The St. Matthew Passion requires two complete choirs, two orchestras, a continuo section, multiple soloists, and nearly two and a half hours of unbroken music. Gloriæ Dei Cantores performs it Friday and Saturday with Creare Symphonia, their period-instrument partners, in the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans. The church was built for this kind of music: the right ceilings, the right stone, the right silence before the first note.
The Passion tells the story of the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Christ through Bach's most ambitious choral writing, recitative, and aria. It was performed publicly for the first time in Leipzig in 1727. It does not often come to a small Cape Cod church with a full double ensemble. Two nights. Pick one, and plan to sit with it.
✦ Blessing of the Fleet — Community Ceremony · May 31, 2026 · 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM · Chatham Fish Pier, Chatham · Free
The Chatham fishing fleet has been going out for a long time. The blessing exists because the fishermen and their families know what that means.
Sunday at 2, the boats gather at the Fish Pier and the ceremony begins — food, music, games, and the support of Women of Fishing Families. It is not a performance and it is not a tourist event. It is a working waterfront doing what working waterfronts do when the season opens again: acknowledging the sea, the risk, and the people who go out anyway.
If you've never watched the fleet get blessed, this is the Sunday to fix that. Bring the kids. Plan for two hours. Go to the dock.
✦ Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra: Sandbar Series IV — Romance & Reckoning — Chamber Concert · May 31, 2026 · 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM · St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Chatham · $35
The Sandbar Series closes its 2026 season with Brahms and Shostakovich piano quintets at St. Christopher's — two of the most demanding pieces in the chamber repertoire, one afternoon, one church.
The Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor is late Romantic at full force: enormous in scope, sustained in its emotional argument, built for an ensemble that knows what it's carrying. The Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G minor, written in 1940, is tighter and darker — a piece shaped by what the composer was living through. Together they make an afternoon that asks something of the listener.
St. Christopher's gives the music the right room. Sunday at 3 is the only time this program happens. Note: it runs simultaneously with the Fleet Blessing. Two strong Sunday options, same hour, different roads. Plan accordingly.

The Importance of Being Earnest closed its run at Harwich Junior Theatre on Sunday. The Addison Art Gallery opened "On and Off the Walls: Meet Cape Rep" Friday evening. The Orleans Farmers Market ran its second Saturday. 9-Ball at Cape Rep finished its closing-weekend run. The summer has begun.
Your event belongs here
This list exists because people in Brewster, Chatham, Harwich, and Orleans are doing things worth knowing about. If you're running one of them — a class, a concert, a walk, a workshop, a dinner, an opening, a town meeting, a kids' program, a community gathering — send it to us.
We read every submission. We don't charge for listings. We don't favor big venues over small ones. If it's happening on the Lower Cape and it's worth a neighbor's time, it has a real shot at being in the next issue.
What to send: event name, date, time, location, price (or free), and a link or a few sentences about what it actually is. That's it.
Deadline: Monday at noon for that Thursday's issue.

The people who read this newsletter are locals. They show up. Getting in front of them costs you nothing but two minutes and an email.
