What’s Happening at the Senior Centers This Week

Blues in Brewster, a fire story in Chatham, soil talk in Harwich, and the kind of senior center week that quietly sneaks up on you

What’s Happening at the Senior Centers This Week

April 23–29, 2026 | Brewster · Chatham · Harwich · Orleans

The forsythia has mostly finished its performance. The walking groups are back out. And on Wednesday afternoon in Brewster, a guitarist will sit down and walk a room through the roots of American music with nothing but strings and time.

That is the shape of the week on the Lower Cape. Some history. Some movement. Some practical help. Some company. And more than a few reasons to show up somewhere.

Wednesday, April 29 — The One Worth Planning Around

Fingerstyle Blues Comes to Brewster

1:30 PM

Stephen Shields comes to 1673 Main Street for The Evolution of Country Blues, a live performance and tribute to fingerstyle guitar from the early 1900s through the Jazz Age and into the folk scenes of the 60s, 70s, and 90s.

This is not background music. It is a guided trip through the kind of playing that helped shape American sound before amplifiers entered the picture, and Shields knows exactly how to carry that story.

Space is limited. Call the Brewster COA at 508-896-2737 to reserve a seat.

Thursday, April 23 — Fire, Soil, and a Busy Day Elsewhere

The Night Nantucket Burned

Chatham CFAL
11 AM

Speakers from the Nantucket Historical Association bring NHA On the Road: The Great Fire of 1846 to the Center for Active Living, telling the story of the blaze that destroyed most of Nantucket’s commercial waterfront and forced the island to reinvent itself.

What makes this one stand out is that it does not just review the aftermath. It puts you inside the moment. For anyone who likes local history with real stakes, this may be one of the more absorbing hours available on the Lower Cape this week.

Held at CFAL, 193 Stony Hill Road. Registration required: 508-945-5190.

What’s Actually Going On in Your Soil

Harwich COA
10–11:30 AM

At 100 Oak Street, Keith Wilda of Blue Stream Aquaculture leads Soil Health, a session on what makes soil alive, how to understand what you are working with, and why the first two inches of a healthy garden matter more than most people realize.

If you are putting anything into the ground this spring, this is probably the morning to spend indoors first.

For details, call 508-430-7550.

Also Thursday...

In Brewster, Senior Dining is at 11:30 AM, Bingo starts at 12:15 PM, and the Brewster Men’s Coffee Club settles in at 2 PM.

How Change Actually Begins

Chatham CFAL
12 PM

The Chatham COA launches Small Changes, Big Impact, a new one-on-one health and wellness coaching program, with an introductory session led by Outreach Coordinator Kerri Kelly.

The program runs through 30-minute private appointments on Friday mornings and focuses on sleep, stress, exercise habits, and other everyday patterns, using evidence-based tools including SMART goals and motivational interviewing.

The first cohort begins May 8. This is the session where you learn more and sign up.

Call 508-945-5190.

In Orleans, Comfort Kitchen lunch lands at noon with Cheesy Beef Enchiladas, Southwest Salad, and Dessert for $8, with reservation required.

Monday, April 27 — New Trails and a Civic Reality Check

Nordic Walking Starts in Harwich

10 AM

The VNA’s Nordic Walking program begins its spring-summer session this Monday at the Harwich COA and runs through June 8.

Nordic walking uses poles to bring the upper body into the workout, turning a regular walk into something closer to a full-body cardiovascular session. The first meeting is indoors for instruction. After that, participants head out onto Harwich’s trails.

If you have been meaning to move more this spring but needed a real reason, this is a pretty good one.

Register through the VNA at 508-957-7423.

What Chatham Is Actually Being Asked to Vote On

Call 508-945-5190 for details.

And in Brewster, of course, Stephen Shields is on at 1:30 PM. If that is your kind of afternoon, call early.

Before You Go

The Lower Cape senior centers are not waiting rooms. They are places where people learn something new, walk a little farther than they thought they could, sit with difficult things in good company, and sometimes hear music that reminds them of exactly where they are and who they have been.

This is a strong week. Pick one thing and go.
